Current Training Pathway

Since the 1970s, Emergency Medicine has been developing around the world, with many countries now fully recognizing the medical specialty as such, resulting in dedicated training pathways, a strong community of physicians, and national guidelines and strategies related to Emergency Medicine.

In Switzerland, there is currently no dedicated training pathway, meaning physicians interested in becoming Emergency Medicine specialists (as per international definition) need to first complete a separate speciality title (see graph below) before being eligibile for the susbspecialty title. This has in its own right generate a lot of debate regarding the potential loss of interest of trainees, as well as a lack of standardisation of skills (see here for a discussion on the proposed training algorithm). Nonetheless, until Emergency Medicine is recognised as a fully-fledged speciality (and the proposed training algorithm is accepted), the following applies:

Details of the above described training pathway, including mentioned annexes and specificities (Category 1 ED, etc), can be found on the website of the ISFM website (https://www.siwf.ch) [ISFM = regulatory agency for postgraduate medical training] and the SGNOR website (https://sgnor.ch).
